SKYPE
Skype is another tool similar to Zoom that makes communication among people all over the world possible. With Skype, users can have access to instant messaging, video and voice chats or conferences.
It is also a tool that many teachers use to give lessons to students who are in any place of the world.
Some of the uses of Skype in the classroom are:
- Video conferencing with the students while away from the classroom
- Having guest speakers give a talk to students
- Connecting with other classes within the school or with a school in another place
- Giving students extra help after school hours
Some of the advantages of using Skype are
- It is reliable
- It is easy to use
- It has good sound and video quality
- It is free and paid
- It is well-known
In my experience as a language learner, I use Skype for instant messaging and video conferences to connect with native speakers of the language I am learning. For instance, I have a French group who meets every Wednesday to practice the language for two hours. It is really rewarding!
ZOOM!
Zoom is a web page that offers people different kinds of services such as online meetings, video conferences, instant messaging, web seminars, and others.
Some of the things that you as a language teacher can do with Zoom are:
- Teach lessons
- Make videos that can be saved to a specific folder
- Share your screen
- Make annotations
- Host people from around the world
- It is reliable
- It is easy to use
- The videos are high quality
- The sound is good
- It is free and paid too
The only drawback is that not many people know about it.
To Flip or not to Flip
I would flip my classroom for the following two reasons:
1. It would reduce greatly the time spent on classroom explanations giving more time to other more engaging activities and giving my students more individual attention. As Russell Stannard says, it frees up class time to be able to focus on tasks, group work or other projects in class. Many times, I do not have enough time in class for doing different kinds of activities, so this technique would allow me more flexibility to plan more fun stuff to do in class.
2. It would foster students’ autonomy. I would get away from a teacher-centered class. I can assign online material for students to watch or read at home before coming to class. When the students come to class, they will be better prepared and more aware of the new material. As Katie Gimbar explains it in her video, the students can pause, rewind, and re-watch, post questions, all at their own pace. Being a little more independent, the students will be more motivated and will feel more productive.
KAHOOT
Last weekend, I learned to use Kahoot as a learning tool in the classroom. Kahoot is basically a game-based technological tool that teachers can use to have students learn or review any subject they are learning in class. Students need to have their own device connected to internet in order to be able to use it and play with it. Since I am teaching the simple past tense using irregular verbs, I decided to try it out last Monday. I had already asked the students to study the irregular verbs at home, so I thought it would be a good idea to play it at the beginning of the class. That would give time for the late comers to integrate to the class. Fortunately, all students had their own devices connected to internet, so I had no problem explaining the tool and having them play. We did two games. The first one was just to have a quick overview of the most common irregular verbs. They had a hilarious time. They laughed and got engaged in the activity and at the same time they were learning. The second game was a little more challenging. In this one, they had to practice with the irregular verbs in affirmative and negative sentences and questions. They really enjoyed it too. If it had been for them, they would have spent the whole class playing Kahoot. They had a lot of fun and so did I. I really recommend this powerful learning tool to all teachers.

Padlet
Padlet is a website that allows users to create what is called a digital canvas. The person may choose to post images, texts, or videos from their cell phones or their computers. One of the advantages that makes Padlet so attractive for classroom or school use is that many people can post to the same wall at the same time making it useful for so much information worth sharing. Teachers and learners may access Padlet from their own mobile devices or computers.
There are so many ways in which teachers can use Padlet to enhance their teaching. Teachers may use their own creativity as to how they can use it according to their own teaching environment and needs. Here are just a few examples:
- Collaborative activities
- Book or lesson discussions
- Student portfolio
- Planning an event with the class
- School activities
- Parent communication board
- Student oral presentation posters
MALL
Mobile Assisted Language Learning
Mobile Assisted Language Learning or MALL is a way of learning languages using mobile devices mainly cell phones or tablets. Through MALL, students and teachers are able to have access to numerous learning materials by downloading the apps. The advantage of MALL is that the user can use his/her mobile device to learn languages anywhere and whenever he or she wants. The learner may use his/her spare time to take advantage to learn any time, any place.
In my own experience as a language learner, I have used a number of mobile apps to study Portuguese, Italian, and French. I Think they are also powerful tools because they are entertaining, you don't need to have a schedule, and you don't need to be in a classroom to learn and practice the language you are studying. Some of the mobile apps for learning and practicing languages that I like and I recommend are:

As with some of the terms used in this course, the word gamification comes new to me. When I first read the title of the booklet written by Graham Stanley, I knew that it was related with games. Still, I went to the dictionary to check what exactly gamification is all about. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines it as “the process of adding games or game like elements to something (such as a task) so as to encourage participation”. It also mentions that even though the concept is not new, the word was added to the English lexicon in 2010. I thought this fact was really interesting because we are dealing with so much new terminology in this 21st century. In this essay, I am going to examine what this concept means to me and whether or not I can consider integrating digital games and gamification in my own teaching experience.
I have always been fond of using games in the classroom to motivate students’ learning and engagement. Through games, students can practice all fours skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Games can be played by all students regardless of their age. Games promote friendly competition which is something that make students feel enthusiastic about. All in all, games provide a positive impact on students in many ways.
In this technological era, we can find a vast number of options for using digital games in our teaching. The author of the booklet gives many ideas as to how to start, when to start, and how to do it. In my case, since I am not a real digital gamer, I would have to start experiencing myself with some of the games that are available on internet. Then I need to see how the game can be adapted to my own teaching environment and with the type of students I have. In any case, it is all a matter of trying out and analyzing the viability of using this or that game in my class.
One of the ideas that the author gave which called my attention is about using “walkthroughs”. Again, this is another term that I had never heard before in relation to computer games. Basically, a walkthrough is a set of instructions given in order to complete the task of a game. The value in it, as Stanley explains, is that the text with the instructions is full of vocabulary, verbs and directions for the student to follow. What I like about this way of gaming is that it does not require a lot of preparation from the part of the teacher. The negative side of it is that it can be time consuming, so it means I would have to consider this aspect so it does not affect the pacing of my lesson.
As far as gamification is concerned, I agree that it is possible to motivate our students to be as engaged in learning as we all want them to be. Lately, I have observed how many children, youngsters, and even adults, have become absorbed by digital games. I am sure that we can use this to our benefit to make our students learn better through appropriate games that can be used for learning and practicing English. People in general, especially children, are curious about trying out new games. So why not use this curiosity to our advantage as teachers. As the author well says it, “learning needs to be made fun again” so the students learn better in a more relaxed and engaging way.
In my own personal teaching experience, I see countless positive aspects to implement gamification in my classes. I have the advantage of having the necessary tools in my class to use digital games. I am sure students will get much more engaged in the learning process, and they will definitely learn much faster. My challenge will now be taking time to search for the suitable game that copes with the learning objective of a given lesson. I know it is feasible and I can accomplish it if put the necessary effort in it.
EDMODO
Edmodo is a wonderful digital tool for teachers, students, school administrators, and parents. It is a large global education network. It is a platform somehow similar to Schoology where educators, students, administrators, and parents of a given school are all connected. What many people like about Edmodo is that it is very secure and protects the privacy of its users, especially when we talk about children. Here, teachers and school administrators can organize assignments, grades, notifications, and share important information.
Since my workplace uses the platform Schoology, it is not likely that I use Edmodo at the moment. Still, I am glad I had the opportunity to play with it a little in class with my classmates. I can see that it is a friendly platform, very easy to use, very flexible, and free!

So, what is Twitter all about?
Twitter is basically a social network where users post messages known as tweets. When it first started, the posts were restricted to a maximum of 140 characters, but since last november that number has been doubled to 280.
However, Twitter is more than just another social network. Twitter is a another powerful tool that can be used for education. Teachers, students, and parents can find a lot of benefits in using Twitter; for example, assignments, homeworks, announcements, organizing contests, sharing interesting information, etc.
In my own teaching experience, I would use Twitter in the following ways:
- To get important and relevant resources for my teaching.
- To have students look for important topics that will benefit their learning experience.
- To subscribe to relevant hashtags.
- To create a discussion chat room with my students.
- To share interesting topics.
What about using Quizlet
Another powerful tool we teachers can take advantage of is Quizlet. With Quizlet, we can prepare teaching flashcards to study, practice or review any kind of subject we are teaching. If we do not have time to prepare one set, we can look from among the thousands of possible study sets other teachers have created. I have used Quizlet with my tutoring students to practice verbs or vocabulary. I even found one related to figures of speech and reading comprehension. It is great because the students can also listen to the words and definitions, they can practice, and they can play. I will definitely use this tool in my teaching especially to present new vocabulary.
My Biggest Challenge
In my personal experience, my biggest challenge for using technology in my classes is getting rid of my fears. I did not grow up with technology, so it does not come easy to me yet. Besides, because of my migratory status in Panama, I had to spend several years away from working in regular classrooms. I did not realize how much technology had advanced in the field of education in the last few years. It was not until last year when I began to teach again that I began to experience this revolution. Since then, I have felt that I have a lot to learn on this matter in order to feel more at ease using all the different kinds of tools and programs that are available for teachers and students. Right now, I feel a little scared because there is so much information available that I do not know if I will be able to process it all quickly. I know I need time.
I have read that his fear of technology is a normal feeling that many teachers experience at the beginning when they are not used to using technology in their teaching. I know I have to be open minded and look for ways to train myself so that I can overcome such fears. I will try to do it one step at a time and little by little I am sure I will be able to integrate technology into my classes properly.
In fact, I have already begun solving my problem or better said, challenge. My first step has been taking this course which will help me build the necessary skills to be able to implement technology in my classes. The next step is to ensure I will continue receiving the right training to be able to use technological tools in my teaching effectively. It is not just a matter of learning new technology-enhanced activities, but the key is to learn how to integrate them in my classes. I will try to find good opportunities in my courses to put into practice what I have learned. Thank goodness, my workplace is open to this and provides the necessary means to be able to fulfill the goal.
Reflective Paper 1
When I read the title of our discussion topic “to flip or not to flip”, I became curious as to what that phrase referred to. In my teaching experience, I had never come across the term “flipping the classroom”. What is this? I asked to myself. As I saw the videos and read the articles suggested, my curiosity turned into deep interest in this topic. Since one of the textbooks suggested for the writing of this essay is actually about flipping your classroom, I decided to read it and learn more about this technique. I had no idea that Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams, the authors, were the founders of this revolutionary model. In this essay, I will analyze the information I read, what I learned, and how this model could make an impact in my own teaching experience.
For years, teachers have thought about the best way to make their classes less teacher-centered and more student-centered. Even though Bergmann and Sams were not the first ones to come up with the idea of flipping their classrooms, they were the ones who spread the model when they started to share their class videos via internet and many schools became interested in their model. Basically, the idea of the flipped class is, according to Bergmann & Sams (2012), that in which everything that was traditionally done in class is now done at home and vice-versa. That way, the attention in class would be more on the student and less on the teacher. Bergmann and Sams had the wonderful idea of preparing videos of their chemistry lessons so the students could watch them at home whenever they wanted, as many times as they wanted, learning the material at their own pace, and writing down annotations, doubts or questions that would be clarified during the following class. VoilĂ ! There would not be any more long in-class explanations which sometimes would take more than half the class time leaving very little time for hands-on activities or other important work. As I was reading how they did it, at the same time, I was thinking about how this model would be so useful in my classes to avoid too many in-class grammar explanations.
As the authors suggest, moving from the traditional classroom to the flipped classroom model and then to the flipped mastery program has to be a gradual process. In chapter 4 of their book, Bergmann and Sams explain about how to implement the model in our classes. They give tips on how to make our own videos using the necessary equipment and programs. Here is where I stick to their advice about moving gradually. At this moment, I would not feel very comfortable creating my own videos, so I would use other teachers’ videos in such case. Besides as they describe it, making our own videos takes some time and technology knowledge that I do not master yet.
This model of teaching has taught me several interesting things that I had not realized before. First of all, by applying this technique in my classes, I will save time in class, and I will have more time for different kinds of communicative activities. The students will come to class better prepared and readier to work on practice and production. Furthermore, I will be able to work closer with those students who have more difficulties. I could have different groups of students working on different tasks at the same time depending on their needs. The authors only mention the videos made by them as the material for students to use before going to class, but there are other options that we can find on the internet too. With the technology that we have available, I can also get rid of the burden of grading tests because the computer can do it for me. More importantly, I have to be aware that in order to use the teaching videos, I have to have clear learning objectives, analyze if the video is appropriate or not, and I have to make sure that the students have access to the material online. For this, I think that the Schoology platform that we use in my job will work just fine. All students have access to it so they can look for the material there. Finally, flipping my classroom does not mean that I will sit back and relax in class. On the contrary, I will have to be very active moving around, helping students where it’s needed, clarifying doubts, and guiding them as they work on their tasks.
As a conclusion, I would definitely want to start flipping my classes from now on. I am aware that I need to have more expertise in the use of technology, but I know that with time and dedication I will accomplish it. In this era of advanced technology, where most students have access to all kinds of digital devices and resources, introducing this way of teaching in my classes will make my students more motivated, engaged, and for sure the results will be very positive.
